I am scheduled to take a pre-employment polygraph tomorrow for a job as a jailer at a sheriffs office. For the past 6 1/2 months I have been taking Paxil for depression. Tuesday(4/27) my doctor told me he didnt feel I no longer needed them and to quit taking them. The last pill I took was Monday(4/26). I am now having a bit of withdrawal symptoms(nervousness, jittery, nauseous, trouble concentrating, anxiety). My question is this.... Since I am experiencing these symptoms will it affect my polygraph in anyway? IP: Logged |

It's hard to tell. If by jitteriness you mean you're constantly squirming, then that would be problematic. It's my understanding those all those effects you describe rapidly cease, but it may be worth a call to the examiner the day before if it's still a problem for you. Nausea isn't good on test day either. You should be able to control the former, but there's not much you can do about the latter. You may want to call your doctor and see what he or she recommends. I'm not a doctor and may be wrong in my understanding of the effects. Your doctor is the person you pay for competent medical advice, so take advantage of it. After all, if what you're experiencing isn't normal, you need to know that sooner than later. Most people who aren't on medication experience many of those same feelings before a test; it's pretty natural, and we test them all the time. IP: Logged |

I usually just read posts, but this is a personal one for me.Talk to your doctor and your polygraphers. Paxil has an extremely short half-life so you will be experiencing withdrawal symptoms already. (Unfortunately, they only get worse from here on out.) You may also want to look into herbal, over-the-counter sedatives such as valerian, melatonin, and chamomile. Be honest with the polygraphers and explain that you aren't feeling too hot. You may actually find that the worst part is the pre-interview, and the polygraph itself can be kind of hypnotic. Once I got everything off my chest I was fine, and I nearly fell asleep during the test itself. PS...keep your chin up...Paxil withdrawal is the worst in the world. I honestly think your doctor is irresponsible for telling you to go cold turkey, because Paxil is a very strong drug. You may wish to taper down, cutting the pill into smaller and smaller pieces as you go. Good luck with everything and keep us informed.
