I have a friend who is diagnosed with bipolar disorder and takes the medication Abilify daily. He was accused of trying to commit a crime approx 5 years ago. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity, though wanted to go to court (but that's a whole other story). He has served time in a mental hospital and currently is in a group home as the next step before he can live on his own again. He would like to take a polygraph test to prove he didn't do what he was accused of. He knows it wont make a difference with the situation he is in, or most likely wont but wants to take the test to prove to friends/family etc that he is telling the truth.
My question is since he is Bipolar could it be said that he's "crazy" and that's why he passed the test? Or that since he has a mental illness he thinks he didn't do it so therefore he would pass the test?
He is on a very limited income and I would hate to see him spend the money on the test if when he gets the results that he didn't do it that it would not give him the closure/acceptance with his family because of his illness.
Thank you in advance to anyone that can help with this.

The issue is how he presents on the day of the test. (If he's psychotic on the day of the test, he won't be tested. If the person is manic or depressed on the day of the test it might have to be rescheduled, etc.) Being bi-polar isn't going to make a liar appear truthful, nor will it make the trtuhful appear to be lying. Medication works differently in everyone. The worse case sceneario, though, would be an inconclusive test, i.e. no opinion of truth or deception.

Bi-polar people get tested all the time. It's nothing new.
