1. EDITORIAL: "Have you ever saved a life with your
polygraph?"

I'm looking for a few stories where you fine folks have
actually saved a life (physically) by the use of your
instrument and your polygraph skills.

Would you please send me a short write up of how that
happened and whether I can use it in publication. Please
send it regardless, but I won't print it without your
permission. Anonymous is okay as well.

Send to support@polygraphplace.com

****************************************************

One more response after failing a polygraph. I
really enjoyed this one. Please send yours in as
well. Thanks.

Here is this issue's response.

1. "I may have done it but I really can't remember
but I am sure I didn't"

2 TRUE POLYGRAPH STORY: "Twelve year old murder case is
solved" by Chuck Lynch

TRUE STORY: I received a call from an old retired United
States Marine who lives in a Northeast Atlantic Coast
City. He wanted to get a "far away out of town polygraph
examiner" to administer him a polygraph test. He was very
secretive about everything but mailed his entire fee up
front before his arrival to my office in North Carolina.

When the old guy arrives, he was very guarded with his
information and I told him I could not do a polygraph
examination without a little more candidness on his part.
He told me a story about picking up a hooker in 1992 in
his city which is very close to the State Line of another
Northeast city. He called a friend who was standing by
when he had secured the hooker and the old guy and the
hooker agreed to meet his friend at this old rock quarry
over their state line for sex. On the way to the quarry
location, the hooker asked the old guy to drop her off at
a friend's house to "freshen up". The old guy waited 30
minutes and the hooker returns to continue the trip to
the quarry. The old guy did not know that the hooker's
friend at the house wrote down his license plate number
before he left.

When the two arrived at the quarry a sexual act was
completed. The hooker then got out of the old guys car
and went to the old guy's friend's truck, which was
parked behind a building at the location. The old guy
presumed it was his friend who had arrived earlier. The
old guy pulled his vehicle around in a dark secluded
location, stopped his engine and rolled down his window.

A few minutes later he heard three shots from the
location of where his friend was parked. About two minutes
later, his friend quickly left the Quarry alone and on the
way out noticed my old guy sitting parked. The other man
slams on his brakes and puts his truck in reverse and
begins to back up towards the old guy but suddenly stopped
backing and quickly left the quarry. The old guy never
went to the location behind a building to even see if the
hooker was still there or may be injured or dead.

Several days later, the old guy reads in the news that a
body of a female was found at the quarry.

Several weeks later, an investigator with the State Police
came to his address questioning him about being with the
women because her friend had got a license number the
night he stopped at the house at her request. The old guy
admitted picking up the women but lied to the state police
investigator about taking her to the quarry. He gave the
investigator another location where he left her when they
had finished business. The old guy stated that he never
heard another word from the police and twelve years have
now passed. His friend has never discussed that night the
old guy, nor has the old guy ever asked his friend any
questions. It turns out the friend is his ex-son-in-law.

The morning after the meeting at the quarry, the old guy
checks in his drawer of his bedroom dresser and his pistol
is missing. About a month later in 1992, the pistol
re-appears in his drawer all nice and clean. The old guy
wanted me to administer him a polygraph on such limited
information so I fixed up an Army Zone Comparison test
format. Keep in mind the old guy either really forgot the
woman's name or he really never received it. I asked the
following relevant questions:

R5. Did you kill that woman? Answer: "No"

R7. Did you kill that woman you drove to the quarry with
to have sex? Answer: "No"

R10. The last time you saw that women at the quarry, was
she alive and walking towards that truck?
Answer: "Yes"

After scoring the charts, I got a -14 spread evenly across
the spots with the heaviest number on R10. I ran the exam
through Polyscore and got DI greater than .99 I ran his
charts through Axciton's newest chart analysis and got
104% deception indicated with the heaviest ranking being
again R10. I ran it through Identifi and got a -14 with a
reliability score of 98.878% with the spot in R10 showing
a little heavier response.

I told the old guy he was not telling me the truth and was
holding out on me. I also asked him after 12 years of only
one police questioning was he having trouble sleeping and
eating the last six weeks. I asked him "Are you expecting
a knock on your door from the police?" He finally
admitted yes to that question. I asked him why after all
these years did he expect a visit from the police over a
death in 1992 he is not even sure had been solved. He
told me "Maybe some new evidence has surfaced."

The old guy swore up and down he did not shoot that woman
at the quarry and asked how could he fail the polygraph.
I explained to him that based on what he told me, he has
enough guilty knowledge and close proximity to the
killing that without him telling me the entire 100% truth,
he could never pass a polygraph examination on this
killing. Especially if he was the shooter. I suspect but
never got him to admit, that he has already been recently
questioned by the police again and that taking a polygraph
examination was mentioned by the police. I fully believe
he was trying to see if he could pass a polygraph if in
fact he was not the shooter, only heard the shots and
never saw her body. I think he got his answer because
with this much information and knowledge of a murder that
he may or may not have actually committed he would not
pass a rookie polygraph examiner's examination.

I wish my old guy good luck and it appears God is dealing
with him on this matter. Maybe God will convict him to go
talk to the police and tell the truth this time.

By Chuck Lynch

***** addendum to the story ******

A few days later, I received this email from Chuck
regarding this Polygraph Test.

"My true polygraph story as an ending now. My old retired
Marine Corp guy e-mailed me last night and he told me he
was headed down to the State Police to turn himself in.
He stated that he could not eat or sleep anymore. So I
believe God was convicting him to do the right thing. I
have always found that eventually everyone who has either
killed someone or was involved in killing someone and
went undetected ten or more years eventually cannot live
with themselves anymore and decide to do the right thing.

You can keep secrets from man but God always knows and he
will eventually deal with one years down the road. It is
so sad."

significant way? Please send it to:

4. POLYGRAPH TIPS & IDEAS: "Have we ever thought about
using a different question in the first position in a
ZC/MGQT or SPOT structure?" by Michael Lynch

The first question in any ZC or MGQT structure is a
throw-away. Any response generated is disregarded for
whatever purpose. If so, why ask it? "Is your first name
John?" or "Is today Monday?" will generally affirm either
what the examinee has read about these questions being
'baseline' questions or confirm the examinee's belief
the examiner is an idiot (of course my name is John and
today is Monday).

Rather than waste it, why not use the first question to
help the examinee focus on the purpose of the
examination? After all, that is why he or she is in our
office.

Zone Comparison and MGQT:
Are you aware this test is about the death of a human
being?
Are you aware this test is about the theft of money?
Are you aware this test is about sexual conduct?

A caveat with ZC and MGQT - we should not use the victim's
name or other identifying criteria in this question as
such use could place undue emphasis on the relevant
question. Vagueness applies to both the comparison and
the relevant question and is therefore neutral.

Pre-Employment:
Are you aware this test concerns your qualifications to
be a (police officer, dispatcher, etc.)?

First questions can be useful.
