1. EDITORIAL: "Top Ten Reasons (excuses) Why I failed my
Polygraph Test"
We've all heard them, the
first...or second or third
words out of the mouths of those examinees who have just
been told they failed their polygraph test.
I'm putting together a top
ten list of reasons or excuses
about 'Why I failed my Polygraph Test'
I want the funny, sincere
& bizarre. Don't hold back. If
you have heard it from the examinee's mouth, please let
me know.
Here are a few I have heard
to get us started:
1. I was just too nervous
2. That box of yours must be broken
3. All I could think about was getting out of here so
I can go and vote.
Your turn, just hit reply
and let me know. Or email to

Recently one of my customers
complained that their last
shipment of paper (for a pentax printer) was of a lesser
quality. We felt that this was unusual since we had
purchased the rolls from the same source that we've
used all along, Pentax.
We contacted Pentax and learned
that they had just
recently changed roll suppliers. We can only surmise that
the new supplier is using a different quality of paper
than the original.
In our effort to find the
same quality of rolls as what
was originally supplied to us by Pentax, we have
contracted with a thermal roll manufacturer that is
based in the U.S. Since we are not buying from Pentax
or their national distributor, we can now offer the
original quality paper at a considerably lower price.
The customer that I mentioned
earlier, who was
experiencing quality issues with the Pentax brand paper,
is now using the compatible brand and is thrilled with
both the quality and price.

COUNTERMEASURES PROVEN USELESS
A journalist recently took up the challenge to see if
countermeasures really are as 'easy' to use and as
'undetectable' as all the anti polygraph websites and
propaganda say they are.

LA ACCEPTING PROPOSALS
Any examiners interesting in bidding on contracts from
the LAPD?
The City of Los Angeles is
accepting proposals from police
examiners to do pre-employment polygraphs and background
investigatons for LAPD. You may otain a copy of the RFP
by calling 213-473-6474. Any questions should be directed
to: Carol Williams, mailto:mcudiamt@per.lacity.org.
POLYGRAPH TEST RESULTS ARE
REFERENCED IN OFFICIAL RECORDS
Ted Todd, an examiner with the Contra Costa County
District Attorney's Office wrote up a small summary for
me on the case detailed in the following 9th Circuit
Court of Appeals case in California.
TED TODD: In the Wong case,
I was called and asked
to do a polygraph on the boyfriend(Wong) of a woman
who was reported missing. He failed the polygraph
but made no admissions. After Cadaver dogs hit on
the missing woman's car, police wrote a search
warrant that included his computer.
Police found child pornography on his computer and
he was arrested for that. He has not been charged in
the homicide.
He appealed his concivtion and when the court
reviewed his case, they referenced the fact that he
had failed my polygraph exam.
Alice Sin's badly decomposed
body was found in the
Nevada desert several months after she was reported
missing.

4. FEATURE ARTICLE: "The Tiny End Of The Tunnel"
by Richard C. Hickman
When we in the polygraph profession
are asked what it is
we do, it is not uncommon to state that we practice the
Art and Science of Polygraphy, including the practice of
Forensic Psychophysiology, which implies a high degree of
training and expertise. Unfortunately, just paying lip
service to those aspects of polygraphy is not enough,
which leads to the title of this article which touches
briefly on the subject of tunnel vision.
What, you may ask, gives Dick Hickman the right to comment
upon the subject of tunnel vision in our profession? For
those of you who don't already know, I have been part of
the polygraph profession for 42 years. I am a Charter
Member and a Life Member of the American Polygraph
Association and a Life Member of the California
Association of Polygraph Examiners. I am Certified by
polygraph associations and by the Department of Defense
and Naval Criminal Investigative Service. I have testified
as an expert witness at all court levels and have never
been discredited or, in any manner, brought embarassment
upon the profession. On top of this, I am 85 years of age
and have earned the right to comment upon some of my
observations over the years.
One of the things which has always bothered me is the fact
that there are members of our profession who suffer from
accute tunnel vision. Let me list a few of the things I
have heard and am referring to:
1) This is the way I administer
a pretest interview -
there is no other way.
2) This is the way I select and introduce comparison
questions - there is no other way.
3) I use the same comparison questions on all
examinations.
4) There is nothing wrong with having several people in
the examination room during an examination - I do it
all the time.
5) Even if the chart tracings are erratic, I always
render a conclusion.
6) I follow my own rules regarding the selection and
wording of relevant questions.
7) Why should I play a numbers game in chart evaluation
- I can eyeball a chart and immediately make a
decision.
The points noted above are
just examples of the attitude of
too many examiners. This is a case of: "Don't waste my time
trying to sell the idea of all this new crap. This is
always the way I've done it and I'll continue to do it this
way. Such an attitude will most certainly result in some
false positive and false negative results which, in turn,
can set back the profession for years to come. Such an
attitude is bad enough, but what makes it worse is the fact
that those examiners think it is perfectly O.K. to do it
that way. And where and how did those examiners learn
tunnel vision? IF it was taught at an APA accredited
polygraph school that school needs a serious inspection.
Not to be overlooked is the fact that an examiner cannot be
faulted for doing what he was taught to do; however, he can
be faulted for not even trying to use some of the
information available to him.
Over the years, the profession has provided top-notch
training sessions. Also, various publications, such as the
one you are looking at right now, are always alert to
provide new and important information covering all aspects
of polygraphy.
Here is a simple way to visualize
tunnel vision. Roll a
sheet of typing paper into a cone, shaped like an ice cream
cone. The wide open end of the tunnel you created is where
all the important stuff goes. The other end of the tunnel
is only a tiny opening, not serving any useful purpose.
Looking through the wide opening, point the cone to, for
example, a picture on the wall. Looking at the picture in
this manner you might see something colored blue, but that
is all you can wee. As you loosen the roll, a little at a
time, you begin to see that the blue color is a dress worn
by a beautiful young woman. As you continue to unroll the
cone you can now see the entire picture and know that
tunnel vision was depriving you of a wonderful scene.
We cannot absorb or remember everything we see or hear
about administering polygraph examinations. What we can do
is open our minds to the fact that there are, perhaps,
different and better ways to perform some of the functions
of administering a polygraph examination. There is always
something new to learn. Let's erase the term "tunnel
vision" from our vocabulary and replace it with "forward
vision". TRY IT - YOU'll LIKE IT!
